To the reader:

If you were to select and write your most memorable, life-shaping stories, from birth to present, what would they be?

Here are my stories — My Out of the Blue Stories — unembellished, humorous, heartbreaking, spiritual, turbulent, thought-provoking true stories — all of them still meaningful to me.

The sixty-five stories in this book cover a wide range of subjects, including anti-war protests during the Vietnam War, (two arrests, two frame-ups, two exonerations), and then, seven years later, a spiritual awakening, a revolution of consciousness.

I describe my stories as out of the blue because in each one, something unexpected happens, something out of the blue that turns a situation or moment into a story.

My chronologically-presented narratives create a self-portrait incrementally. With each story read, a more dimensional portrait emerges, a process similar to a developing photographic print in a darkroom.

My Out of the Blue Stories is illustrated with eleven photographs, including my portraits of Muhammad Ali, Bob Marley, Patti Smith, Allen Ginsberg and Bruce Springsteen.
