“What a book! several times a day, i think of your little bird presenting itself for eye care. i finished reading a couple of nights ago, and always read with great interest. you give such forthright accounts of your forthrightness. it's rather disarming. i mean, your narration of how things went in court, for example — and, of course, that judge was heaven-sent, and also simply amazing. the stuff with the draft board set my teeth on edge, all over again. in so many ways, it's a time capsule of certain periods highly recognizable to our generation, at least. and as mr. dylan would say, it was bringin' it all back home. i could never anticipate where the book would go next, but it was always fascinating.”

“Scott, I just finished your delightful book “out of the blue stories” and wanted to thank you for sending it. They read to me like parables, meaning stories that don't beat you over the head with a moral, but lay out a story and let you draw your own conclusions. A wonderful, casual and engaging book. I wish my own father had written stories about his life as well. (his life was more of a mystery to me). it's a gift to your family and your readers and we thank you again.”

“A wise/comical/informative/eye-opening/definitely out of the blue set of stories”

“This book contains an incredibly diverse set of stories that is sure to amuse, bewilder, and most definitely entertain readers of all ages and backgrounds. "My Out of the Blue Stories" touches upon varying themes in the author's life, such as spirituality, dissent in its many forms, the importance of personal relationships (primarily as a friend, caretaker, and son), history's tendency to repeat itself (supported by the author's outlook on these events), and the experiences, both interpersonal and intrapersonal, that formed the many adventures the author had during his incredibly rich life.

While reading, I found many interesting points that makes this book stand out in its own unique way. Many key details were omitted to not spoil the book, but I still wanted to highlight these themes:

  • Spirituality: the "A revolution of consciousness" and "Spirit stirs" chapter focuses on the author's relationship with himself and others by means of communication through a "higher medium" (if this is the correct term). However, this theme is seen throughout the novel because it is an important aspect of the author's life.
  • Repetition of history: the author was an active conscientious objector during the war in Vietnam. We are told about the story of his trials, unfair treatment by the law, and how this impacted the author and his family. Moreover, there is an incredibly important historical precedent with regards to protestors being silenced and the unwarranted drama they go through when fighting for what they believe in. Also, the last chapter of the book talks about a conflict the author had with somebody regarding modern politics. One line specifically "I'm shaken by a road rage incident that reflects the times we're living in. Seems like I've been down this road before" relates exactly to an earlier experience in the book. Such insights and historical relations (past to modern) absolutely cannot be ignored.
  • "Nail biters": Certain accounts, such as being Jewish while talking to a radical Syrian man in Algeria, or his indifferent attitude (albeit foolish, sorry Scott) while being mugged at gunpoint, or having a knife pulled on him by a thief are some of the many stories that definitely makes this book a page turner.

To sum it up, this book has everything you would expect from a rich life, and then some. I cannot encapsulate all that the book has to offer in one Amazon review because there is simply too much to discuss. This book was written very clearly and straightforward. However, there is a lot of underlying symbolism and events that just seem perfectly timed". No, it is not embellished or made up (as the author denotes at the beginning), but rather "Out of the Blue" :)

I have no doubt the author will continue to have interesting experiences, but this book truly does give an account of "Out of the Blue" stories. Definitely worth the read.”

“A book you simply can't put down!”

“My Out of The Blue Stories” is the kind of book you want stay up late reading into the wee hours of the morning because it's so hard to put down! This book is filled with wild stories that connect in surprising ways you can't imagine. The stories appear as painted puzzle pieces that fit together to reveal an interwoven work of art.

The book is not only stories of Seldin's richly layered life, filled with bold choices and magical interludes, it's also a poetic journey through various decades of his past.

At times I found myself on the edge of my seat in anticipation waiting to see which way a story would go, and at other times I'd laugh out loud at the irony of a situation. Then I'd find myself in tears, followed by shock, and then delighted with joy and satisfaction as a situation would unfold with a punch of justice in the end! Like smelling salts, Seldin's stories jolt and awaken the senses in a stimulating way.

Seldin's experiences also felt like stones found on a path that lead to a house of truth we can all relate to. It inspires one to reflect on their own life and how our own journey twists and turns in mysterious ways.

The book definitely achieves its goal in making me want to get out pen and paper and connect my own stories on pages I can share!”

“An Unforgettable Memoir of Everyday Magic by an Extraordinary Storyteller”

“Scott Seldin's book is groundbreaking in that in telling his story, he puts his finger on a common phenomenon that we are all subject to—when, for better or worse—something happens “out of the blue,” leaving us forever changed emotionally and spiritually. His “one man's journey through life” takes us from the boy who has a vision while fishing that saves his older brother's life, to the college student who almost loses his life when picked up by police when protesting the Vietnam War. The everyday details of life are infused with everyday magic, as when men appear “out of the blue” to fix his broken-down Buick while traveling through Mexico, or when people burst into spontaneous dancing on the streets of New York while he is selling street art. We find Seldin always listening and learning from his experiences with humor, awe and respect. During a stint as director of a school located in the Adolescent Psychiatric Unit in Santa Fe, we see how his non-medical “approach” of just being with and honestly answering young patients' fears and concerns there helps them ground themselves (an argument for providing more than medication and clinical expertise for anyone marginalized by mental illness). In addition, Seldin pays homage through his amazing photographic portraits (what hasn't this guy done?) of Muhammed Ali, Bob Marley, Patti Smith, Alan Ginsburg and Bruce Springsteen, “creative trailblazers…who have touched our souls and inspired us to stay involved in helping create the world we want to live in.” If you've ever wondered what it would be like to have dinner with Jack Kerouac, Lenny Bruce and the Dalai Lama, “My Out of the Blue Stories” is a trip worth taking.”

Scott Seldin's book is a masterfully written and heartfelt adventure. The stories affirm the miracle of the synchronistic beauty of life and how one choice leads to another and become an interwoven tapestry in life. The author approaches his life experiences with openness, wonder and Spirit. The stories seamlessly transition from one to another, where you can't wait to see what happens next. He is aware of the magic of each moment and embraces it with refreshing authenticity. I hope Seldin gifts his readers with a sequel....
